Continuing our segment of story time called INSIDE MY ROOM where we will be sharing poetry instead of monologues or fictional short stories. Today’s story time features a poem called Little Bird by Eunice Gatama.
Little Bird
Eunice Gatama
A little bird once gently whispered in my ears;
You are sweeter than the sap of your tears
So hear my prayers of hope my dear
For I am the little birdie not far but near
A little bird once told me to protect my fragile heart;
No man can fuel your dreams with empty words
calling you sweetheart
So become the composer of your dreams like Mozart.
A little bird once sang;
That my dreams soar higher than patriarchy’s seams
Undo the seams of time like a seamstress make everyone speechless
You are worthy Sis.
A little bird once asked me quietly in the night;
Why do you doubt the magic you hold within?
That your wings are strong and destined to win.
A little bird far back much louder than the rest
Chirped songs of everlasting shackles;
that freedom is far to nest
That the skies are lighter and brighter than the likes of you
That the trees were planted with your sweat with no promise
Now, this little bird’s songs were fierce and honest.
Igniting the whistles from more birds planting thistles of doubt
doubt Rooted in fear
But among the cries rang a beautiful tune
A bird much closer sang to me too.
Fly, fly cried the little bird within
Open your wings and sing;
I am a little bird once lost but Now found
I am The Little Bird who will soar these skies.
That’s Inside My Room #2 we will be sharing more poetry in the future if you are a poet (and I don’t call myself one but here I am writing a poem) you can too submit your work to us!
