Since we were children learning to crawl and walk in my generation bounced to Barney playing on the Tv or Sesame street with Elmo. Dancing in many ways can change the atmosphere of any room, and any space. It is the best way to let loose, have some fun, and trick ourselves into exercising. I find great solace in dancing and a spiritual connection to it. In my culture, traditional Kikuyu or Kenyan dancing is a communicator. Dance soothes, entices, provokes, and challenges, all at once or somehow throughout the night. It is a language of its own and brings the community together through songs and rhythm. For many performers dancing started at a young age either doing ballet, jazz, tap, or a cultural dance.
Finding Your Groove
As adults, we learned how to dance when we go out and boogie down late in the night in town or after hearing some good news, or song. In films, moments like in Risky Business, as Joel Goodsen (Tom Cruise) blasted “Old Time Rock and Roll” alone at home with no trousers and slipped on a pair of socks and shaking their bottom around the house might be your style. The Wiz 1978 a highly recommended adaptation of Wizard of Oz with a Black excellence spin to it. The whole movie is a mood, and the infamous song “Everybody Rejoice” takes the cake. Everyone is celebrating and rejoicing after taking down the wicked witch. A great cause of celebration after overruling their dictator. Your reason to dance does not have to be a grand gesture or moment; it can be you simply swaying back and forth to your favourite track. I am personally obsessed with late 60 – 70s funk and disco music. These two genres were made for the purpose bringing the community together to celebrate, let loose and enjoy the rhythm and jive of the beat.I feel like any music during that era will put a smile on your face and get you up on your feet. When starting your day, I suggest adding dancing for 3 minutes in your morning routine and watch how your mood will completely change.
