EMERGING ARTIST
May 11, 2020Why a blog you may be thinking? Instead of a podcast on SoundCloud or youtube. I think there is something wonderful in writing your thoughts done, and journaling them. As if I have started my own autobiography before my time comes. A historical moment in my books. Anyhow, welcome to Shakespeare’s Hunnies. We will refer to you as our Hunnies, I hope you don’t mind.
Before we get too far down this creative journey together we thought it would be best to introduce ourselves!
LAUREN
“Introducing yourself” oh geez, well I truly believe you’ll understand me over time. Today I’ll settle with: A Mischievous Dance-Theatre-Clown-Singing-Chaotic-Collage of a person (working title). I’m the girl who dances through the halls at my university at 12 o’clock at night because it felt like a good idea – and it usually is.
Growing up I always watched films like My Fair Lady, Grease, Scooby-Doo… Alien. From that, I gathered up what I thought life was going to be (chestbursters and all). I wanted to share the joy and make others laugh, that being said it took me quite a long journey to discover my love for acting and performing in general. It wasn’t until I took my first musical theatre dance class until I discovered it, and from then little Laurens world was transformed forever…
Now I strive to be able to reach out and communicate and share experiences and questions. Of course, I would always have the fear of failure, rejection or embarrassment (all super fun things). The fear could be overwhelming sometimes. It was hard growing up knowing you wanted to perform for others but never really finding the courage to admit it. Being scared of who you want to be. So, I’m doing this, as an experiment if you will. I want to know you, and I want you to get to know me. I want to be able to help people create art and talk about art and keep the dialogue going. A conversation I think can be one of the most beautiful things. But with our generation, there’s seldom any outside of the internet, so here I am!
EUNICE
The most human thing I could possibly do in my life is to share my own story. That is what drives me as a person occupying this earth. You only live once, so live it to your fullest and look fabulous while doing it.
Growing up, dancing has been the center of my life. In a Kenyan home, whether it’s a family function, party, cooking in the kitchen when there is music, there is dancing. My parents would play old soul, gospel, Swahili music, and their personal favorite 70s disco/funk. I grew up listening to Stevie Wonder, Funkadelics, and The Supremes. You can say I’m a soul queen. As the youngest of four, I had to grow up fast, and I think because my siblings were over a decade older than me. When they were figuring what they wanted to do in life, I was also asking myself the same question. It always came down to being an artist.
I’m an old soul, I sometimes feel like in my past life I was a Sage. And I don’t mean the herb. Theatre kind of followed me throughout my life. I have always been an entertaining child, making people laugh, creating animations, going to see plays, and copying my favorite actors’/actresses best performances on screens. There is so much rich inner life, and life to experience when you do this type of work. A great escape from reality, and a sense of freedom and expansion from it as well. My passion to bring people joy, and create work beyond reality is why I think theatre is essential. I believe that now is the best time to connect to your community more than ever. I hope that this platform will reach many creators, and those looking for inspiration and information.
