August 12, 2020Life update – Moving during a pandemic
As the quest for adventure continues, I decided to move back to Edmonton.
A little bit of back story: I train at the University of Alberta, so I usually live in Edmonton during the “school year” and move back to Calgary for the summer to work and spend time with my family. With everything COVID going on, I was unsure about moving back to Edmonton because, unfortunately, the majority of my classes with be online next semester.
Don’t even get me started on doing a theatre program online. That’s another topic for another time.
But besides Edmonton being the location of my school, it is also where the majority of my class is. It’s where I feel most active and awake as an artist. One might say my artist birthplace. Ooo, I like that, yeah, my artist’s place. Kinda catchy.
Anyway, I also move back because I will be in my first ever film – which is really exciting! I’m shooting for the rest of August in Edmonton, so it made sense to move back based on that too.
I’ve been ion student films before and made films with friends and Shakespeare’s Hunnies before, but I’ve never been a part of a working film crew and family before.
It was especially tricky finding a place in Edmonton that had all of the facilities I needed as an artist. Usually, I would use the Universities Dance studio, drama studios, and voice studios to rehearse in. But the university isn’t allowing people to use their facilities this year, which means I have to find other options. That’s one of the hardest things about being an active dancer and singer; you need to in spaces that accommodate that lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE dancing in my kitchen and singing in the shower, but sometimes you need a little more space.
I searched for a place for a month and couldn’t find anything – but my mum looked for a day and found the perfect place. I don’t know how she does it, but I am forever grateful, haha.
My mum found an apartment complex that has recently come into new ownership. I spoke to the owners and told them my situation about needing a space to sing and not aggravate my neighbours. Thankfully they had a chapel space they didn’t know what to do with, so now they are converting it to a music space for anyone who needs to rehearse or practice instruments. I really lucked out.
I feel that there are so many moving pieces in the world right now, with the ever-evolving pandemic, projects I’m working on and now getting ready for classes in the fall. Change can seem overwhelming at times, but sometimes you have to trust that everything will work out in the end, life finds a way.
We hope your life has been treating you well! If you are looking for a new place in Edmonton, send us a message, and I can send you more information about where I’m staying.
